Emmie Zhu, DMed (China) LAc

Dean of Faculty and Chair of the Herbal Medicine Department, Dr. Zhu was among the top 50 medical doctors in China sponsored by the National Public Health Ministry of China to become the first to study Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture in its new TCM university system. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Shanghai First Medical University in 1953 and went on to graduate in 1961 from Inner Mongolia Medical College in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. She served as an associate professor and Director of the Internal Medicine Department in the Inner Mongolia Chinese Medical Institute before coming to the US in 1985, where she became a visiting professor at the University of California, San Francisco.

With over 40 years experience practicing internal medicine with both Chinese and Western medical backgrounds, Dr. Zhu has contributed to scholarly publications in Chinese and Western Medicine for nearly 30 years; the Ministry of Health in China has honored her for her achievement in Chinese Medicine. She holds membership in the Chinese Medical Association of Internal Medicine, the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Association of the Integration of Chinese and Western Medicine. Dr. Zhu teaches the following courses at AIMC Berkeley: Herbal Prescription; Western Physical Examination; Oriental Clinical Medicine; Western Clinical Science; and Oriental Medicine Diagnosis. She also supervises acupuncture student interns in the Berkeley Community Acupuncture Clinic.


Zhi-Bin (Benny) Zhang, MS LAc

Chair of the Acupuncture Department, Professor Zhi-Bin Zhang has published many books and articles on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in his native China. Professor Zhang earned his master’s degree from GuangZhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and went on to teach, practice and conduct research in TCM at the Traditional Chinese Medicine University and Chinese Medical Hospital of Guang Dong Province for 18 years before coming to the US. Professor Zhang maintains a private practice in San Francisco and teaches the following courses at AIMC Berkeley: Oriental Medicine Diagnosis; Acupuncture Techniques; and Oriental Clinical Medicine. He also supervises acupuncture student interns in the Berkeley Community Acupuncture Clinic.


Xin Zhu (Hua-Ling) Xu, MA LAc

Chair of the Oriental Medicine Department at AIMC Berkeley, Professor Hua Ling Xu previously conducted research in China concerning the effects of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the treatment of gynecological diseases such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), dysmenorrhea , infertility, and menopause syndrome. She has also published several books and research papers on gynecology. Xu was also mentioned in Health Magazine and CNN.com.

Professor Xu earned her master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the GuangZhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China. She has taught in numerous TCM hospitals in China, specializing in gynecology. Professor Xu currently practices in San Francisco, and teaches the following courses at AIMC Berkeley: Oriental Clinical Medicine; Oriental Medicine Treatment Principles and Methods; and Introduction to OM Chinese Language. She also supervises acupuncture student interns in the Berkeley Community Acupuncture Clinic.


Dennis W. Von Elgg, MSTCM LAc

Dennis has been practicing and teaching Oriental Medicine since 1999, and last studied at the International TCM program at the Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He supervises student interns in the Berkeley Community Acupuncture Clinic, teaches Oriental Herbology and Acupuncture classes at the Acupuncture & Integrative Medical College, Berkeley and has a private practice in Berkeley, California. He is the 2008 recipient of the East Bay Express' Best Acupuncturist award.


Gary J. Wedemayer, MS PhD
Chair of Western Science, Dr. Gary Wedemayer has a diverse range of scientific interests, having published papers in astronomy, botany, biochemistry, structural biology, statistics, genomics, DNA sequencing technology, and human physiology. His teaching experience includes General Botany, General Biology with Anatomy and Physiology, Genomics and DNA Sequencing, Cell Biology, in addition to several other highly specialized topics.

Dr. Wedemayer received a BS and an MS in Botany from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and earned his PhD in Botany at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley). He received the Distinguished Teaching Award from UC Berkeley in 1987 for his instruction of Biology, and was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Wedemayer teaches the following courses at AIMC Berkeley: Western Medical Terminology; History of Healing; Surface Anatomy; Anatomy & Physiology; and Pathology.


Larry Spears, MS
Assistant Professor Larry Spears also teaches Qigong at the Quan Yin Healing Arts Center, a traditional Chinese medicine clinic and community center located in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District, and provides program development and management training in strategic planning and knowledge management systems for Real-Solutions. Larry Spears earned his BSc in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, where he also served on the Engineering Faculty; he then earned his MS in Education from California State University East Bay (CSUEB, formerly CSU Hayward). He teaches the following courses at AIMC Berkeley: Integrative Medical Chemistry (BSR); Integrative Medical Biology (BSR); and Physics East & West (BSR).


Tatyana Ryevzina, MS LAc
Fluent in Russian, Tatyana Ryevzina graduated from the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences in Oakland and is also certified as a Yoga Instructor and practitioner of Ohashiatsu bodywork. Tatyana has learned to treat and support patients with Hepatitis C and cancer through practice at Quan Yin Healing Arts Center in San Francisco and the Charlotte Maxwell Complementary Clinic in Oakland, which serves low-income women with cancer. Deeply inspired by the Community Acupuncture practice model, she has dedicated herself to making acupuncture more affordable and accessible, practicing Community Acupuncture in Albany, CA and supervising student interns at the AIMC Berkeley Community Clinic.


Cindy Quattro, PA DAOM LAc
Cindy Quattro has been practicing Integrative Medicine for more than 15 years. She is a Physician Assistant specializing in nutrition-based medicine, hormone balancing and clinical care strategies for chronic diseases.

National Board Certified in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine and is a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. She received her Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine from American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, California in 1990 and is a 2007 graduate of Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in Portland, Oregon concluded by a clinical research thesis on chronic Lyme disease. Her studies in southwestern China included intensive practice in Qi Gong, Classical Chinese Medicine, and Chinese Herbal Medicine. She completed her doctoral externship in Tokyo, Japan where she studied Traditional Japanese Medicine.

Dr. Quattro is a board member of Orthomolecular Health Medicine a national organization of physicians who practice nutrition based health medicine. She currently has a thriving family medical practice in Santa Cruz, California where she integrates western, nutritional, and oriental medicine therapies in a mind body based medical model.


Hideko Pelzer, MSOM LAc
Assistant Professor Hideko Pelzer is a Second Degree Black Belt in the Japanese martial art of Aikido. She graduated from Tsukuba University in Japan, later earning her Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from Meiji College of Oriental Medicine, now AIMC Berkeley. She has a private Oriental Medicine practice in Suisun City, CA. Pelzer is expert in Japanese needling technique, and passes this on to her students when supervising acupuncture student interns in the Berkeley Community Acupuncture Clinic, and teaching Acupuncture Techniques. She also teaches Acupuncture Channels and Points.


Haro Ogawa, MSOM LAc CMT ATC
Haro Ogawa has worked for the New York Mets (Major League Baseball) and privately for Golden State Warriors (National Basketball Association), NASCAR drivers, and the Japanese National Baseball Team. Originally he trained in Japan as a licensed acupuncturist and moxibustion practitioner, certified Shiatsu therapist, massage therapist and athletic trainer, and has practiced Meridian Therapy Acupuncture for over 15 years. His specialties include stress related and gynecological problems, sports medicine, orthopedics and pain management. Assistant Professor Ogawa also graduated with a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from the Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine College, Berkeley (AIMC Berkeley) in 2003. He teaches Oriental Medicine Bodywork and Acupuncture Therapy: Japanese Hari Acupuncture, helps as a teaching assistant in the Japanese Acupuncture Certification program, and practices in the Japanese Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine Clinics at AIMC Berkeley


Glenn Oberman, OMD LAc
Dean of Clinic, Professor Glenn Oberman is board certified in Acupuncture Orthopedics (NBAO) and has been appointed as a Qualified Medical Evaluator by the State of California’s Industrial Medical Council. He earned his BA from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and his MA in International Relations from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Professor Oberman studied Oriental Medicine at the California Acupuncture College, later earning his Oriental Medicine Doctorate from Samra University. He has served as a Director of the California State Oriental Medical Association (CSOMA). Currently in private practice in Berkeley, Professor Oberman also instructs in clinical practice at AIMC Berkeley and teaches the following courses: Research Methodology; Introduction to Practice Building; Ethics and Law; and Nutrition: East and West. He also supervises acupuncture student interns in the Berkeley Community Acupuncture Clinic.


Christine T. Newell, MS LAc DiplAc
Associate Professor Christine Newell received her Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the Academy of Chinese Culture & Health Sciences (ACCHS), and has numerous certifications and experience in holistic bodywork, health care, and nutrition from both Eastern and Western approaches. She teaches Dai Yen Qigong as a certified instructor of the Wen Wu School of Martial Arts and practices Acupuncture in Albany, CA. Christine supervises acupuncture student interns in the Berkeley Community Acupuncture Clinic.


Arian Nachat, MD FABEM FAAEM
Dr. Nachat is a practicing Emergency Medicine Attending at Kaiser Walnut Creek. Dr. Nachat completed her BA at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. After attending medical school at St George's University , Dr. Nachat completed her internship in Family Medicine at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Program at Stamford Hospital and her Emergency Medicine residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan.

Dr. Nachat's other interests include hyperbaric & undersea medicine as well as wilderness medicine. She is published in the 5th edition of Wilderness Medicine by Paul Auerbach. Dr. Nachat's interest in integrative medicine began as a medical student and she is thrilled to be a part of the Integrative Medicine faculty at AIMC Berkeley in the hopes of further combining western allopathic and eastern medicine.

Mary Lynn Morales, MS LAc
With an undergraduate degree in biology from UC Santa Barbara, and a Master's Degree in TCM from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, Mary Lynn maintains a private practice in Kensington, CA. She has volunteered for eight years at the Charlotte Maxwell Clinic in Oakland treating low- income women with cancer using acupuncture and Chinese herbs, worked with Stanford University as an acupuncture researcher, lectures  at the Taoist Conference in Oakland, and teaches and demonstrates tai ji chuan at Zhi Dao Guan Martial Arts Institute.  At AIMC Berkeley Mary Lynn teaches Integrative Clinical Medicine and supervises in the Community Clinic.

Kristi Holmes, MSOM LAc
Kristi Holmes, MSOM LAc, graduated from the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences. After working in the environmental field, she transitioned from global ecology to personal ”ecology” by studying Traditional Oriental Medicine at Meiji College of Oriental Medicine (now AIMC Berkeley) and graduated in 1999. During the three years it took to complete school, Kristi worked as an assistant to Dr. Bick Jane Tang, an Ob/Gyn MD (China) and practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Kristi took over the practice in 2000, when Dr. Tang retired, and currently practices part-time. Kristi lives in Berkeley and currently supervises acupuncture student interns in the Berkeley Community Acupuncture Clinic.


Amy Hanks, MSTCM LAc
A graduate of the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM), Instructor Amy Hanks practices acupuncture and Oriental in San Francisco. She is the principal acupuncturist for a study on post-operative pain at UCSF, and has published and helped translate several OM articles. At AIMC Berkeley, she teaches Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Review.


Elyse Graham, MS LAc
Assistant Professor Elyse Graham served as the Executive Director for both the Immune Enhancement Project and the Acupuncture & Recovery Treatment Services, as well as Program Director of Education and Counseling for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department. For the past eight years she has worked within the San Francisco County Jail system providing acupuncture, education and counseling to support clients in addressing concerns of substance use, violence and domestic violence, serves as Co-Chair on the Marin County HIV/AIDS Care Council, and served on the San Francisco HIV Planning Council. A graduate of ACTCM, she is a certified NADA (National Acupuncture Detox Association) Trainer. She teaches Public Health and Oriental Medicine.


Suzanne Friedman, MSTCM LAc DMQ (China)
Chair of the Medical Qigong Science Department and Director of the Medical Qigong Clinic at AIMC Berkeley, Dr. Suzanne Friedman is the author of Medical Qigong Exercise Prescriptions: A Self-Healing Guide for Patients & Practitioners, and The Yijing Medical Qigong System: A Daoist Medical I-Ching Approach to Healing. She trained under Dr. Robert Johns, Jerry Alan Johnson, and Master Bing Fan YeYoung in the US, and Dr. Xu Hongtao at the Xiyuan Hospital in Beijing, China.

Dr. Friedman is a licensed acupuncturist, nationally certified herbalist, and doctor of medical qigong therapy. She received her doctorate from the Beijing Western District Medical Qigong & TCM Research Institute in Beijing, China. Dr. Friedman is the director of the Breath of the Dao Holistic Medicine Clinic in San Francisco, California. At AIMC Berkeley, she is the Chair of the Medical Qigong Science Department, Dean of the Medical Qigong Clinic,  and teaches the Medical Qigong Practitioner (CMQ) Certification Program.


Lana Farson, MSTCM LAc
A graduate of the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM), Instructor Lana Farson practices Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at a convalescent home in Berkeley, and privately in Walnut Creek. She teaches the following courses at at AIMC Berkeley: Oriental Herbology; and Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Review.

Benjamin E. Dierauf, MS LAc
Dean of the Academic Program, Professor Benjamin Dierauf was awarded “Acupuncturist of the Year” by the American Association of Oriental Medicine (AAOM) in 2003, and received a “Professional Excellence Award” from the National Board of Acupuncture Orthopedics in 2004. An active participant in the development of OM policy, Professor Dierauf has served as a Director and President of the California State Oriental Medical Association (CSOMA), Director on the Council of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine Associations (CAOMA), member of the OM Educational & Professional Competencies Task Force for the California Acupuncture Board (CAB), and Editor in Chief of the California Journal of Oriental Medicine (CJOM).

Professor Dierauf received his BS in Nutrition and Food Science from the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) in 1987 and MS in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM) in 1991. He worked extensively at two community clinics in San Francisco, the Quan Yin Healing Arts Center and the Immune Enhancement Project (IEP), and now practices in the AIMC Berkeley Integrative Medicine Clinic. He is also currently enrolled in the graduate program of Organizational Leadership at the University of San Francisco’s School of Education (USF SOE). Supervising acupuncture student interns in the Berkeley Community Acupuncture Clinic since 1997, he also has taught OM Theory and OM Diagnosis.


Isaac Cohen, LAc
An international leader in the study and application of natural products for cancer and women's health, Isaac Cohen, LAc is Chairman, CEO and President of Bionovo. His expertise is in translational science, developing a number of products for clinical testing that have been awarded Investigational New Drug (IND) status by the FDA, as well as a pipeline of over 50 candidate drugs.

Isaac Cohen is a Guest Scientist at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and has been involved with the UCSF Cancer Research Center and UCSF Center for Reproductive Endocrinology for the past ten years. One of the founding members of the University of California, San Francisco Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research Program, he is a co-investigator on numerous basic and clinical grants and has assembled teams of scientists from four different universities to work on his projects. Mr. Cohen graduated from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM) and serves as adjunct faculty at AIMC Berkeley.


David Caruso-Radin, MSOM LAc MQP Dipl ABT (NCCAOM)
Assistant Professor and Student Affairs Dean, David Caruso-Radin is a graduate of AIMC Berkeley, and is a licensed acupuncturist. He received a Master of Science degree in organizational psychology from Baruch College in New York, NY. He studied Shiatsu and Integrative Nutrition with Paul Pitchford at the Heartwood Institute in Garberville, CA, and is a nationally certified diplomate of Asian Bodywork Therapy. David has earned Wild Goose Qi Gong teacher certification from Master Hui Liu at the Wen Wu School of Martial Arts in El Cerrito, CA, and is trained in Medical Qigong under Suzanne Friedman, MSTCM LAc DMQ at AIMC Berkeley. David teaches Nutrition: East and West, and the Qigong series I at AIMC Berkeley.


Julia Carpenter, MA MSOM LAc
Prior to earning her Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from AIMC Berkeley, Julia earned her BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz in Philosophy and Feminist Studies and then went on to Stanford University where she received an MA while studying for her doctorate in Modern Thought & Literature, a small interdisciplinary studies program where she focused on Gender Studies and Science and Technology Studies. She has taught courses on the Rhetoric of Science, Feminist Research Methodologies, and Writing and Composition. As an acupuncturist, Julia works with low-income communities in the East Bay, and she currently practices privately in Berkeley. Julia teaches Holistic Psychology at AIMC Berkeley.


Ken Berry, MS LAc
Instructor Ken Berry is a graduate of AIMC Berkeley and a licensed acupuncturist. In addition to teaching, Ken maintains a private practice in Sacramento, California and is the Dean of Administration for AIMC Berkeley. His professional interests include OB/GYN and fertility for women and couples. Prior to entering the profession, Ken worked in the fields of health care law, educational administration, and professional development. He holds a black belt in Aikido and is also a certified hypnotherapist. Ken teaches Practice Management and Yang of Practice Building at AIMC Berkeley.


Jason Beito, MS LAc DNBAO
Clinic Director, Jason Beito began studying the principles of Taijiquan, Aikido, & Qigong in order to enhance his athletic performance in football & judo, while earning his undergraduate degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of California, Davis.

He received his Masters of Science in 2001 from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Jason studied  applications of Traditional Japanese Acupuncture & Moxibustion within the context of Keiraku Chiryo (Japanese Meridian Therapy), under the guidance & direction of Koji Ichihashi.

Certified in Firstline Therapy and Acupuncture Orthopedics (NBAO), Beito specializes in therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC) and pain management, providing acupuncture and TLC services in the Integrative Medicine Clinic. He is currently the Clinic Director at AIMC Berkley and teaches Acupuncture Therapy III, IV: Japanese Hari Acupuncture A, B. Beito also is a teaching assistant for the Japanese Acupuncture Certification Program.

Joseph Adams, MTOM LAc 
As a second-generation acupuncturist, Joseph brings lifelong learning into his practice and service as a teacher. In addition to his family heritage and formal training at Emperor’s College in Santa Monica, Joseph served as senior Protégé to Dr. William Morris, DAOM LAc, President Emeritus of the American Acupuncture Association. Ultimately, Joseph was entrusted with the mission of passing on the specialized pulse-taking lineages he had mastered.

Joseph has published articles relating to health, pulse diagnosis and Chinese philosophy. In 2006 he was nominated to the California Oriental Medical Associations Board of Directors and is also proud to serve as an editor for the American Acupuncture Association's quarterly journal, The American Acupuncturist.

In addition to teaching Classical Pulse Diagnosis at AIMC Berkeley, Joseph is a visiting pulse instructor at Emperor’s College in Santa Monica. Joseph and his wife Elise practice acupuncture together in Marin County, providing wholesome care for the entire family.

Dr. Michael Aanavi
Michael Aanavi, Ph.D., L.Ac., is a licensed acupuncturist and clinical psychologist in private practice in San Rafael (www.michaelaanavi.com).  He received his clinical training at the Native American Health Center, the National Asian-American Psychology Training Center, and ACTCM, and has worked extensively in addiction treatment, psychiatric settings, and primary care behavioral medicine.  Formerly on the faculty of UCSF School of Medicine and California School of Professional Psychology, Dr. Aanavi has taught and lectured widely, and currently serves on the advisory board of the Institute for Cross Cultural Research.  His essays on cinema, racism, and other topics have appeared in a variety of professional journals.  In his clinical practice, Dr. Aanavi integrates Jungian and somatic psychotherapies, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, qigong, and mindfulness.
