Japanese Acupuncture Faculty Biographies


Akizo Okada

Dean Emeritus of Traditional Japanese Medicine, Okada Akizo Sensei comes from a long line of Oriental medicine practitioners, including his father, the late Okada Meiyu Sensei. Graduating from the Toyo Shinkyu College of Oriental Medicine in 1971, he took part in the first mission to the People’s Republic of China where he observed several older practitioners practicing meridian therapy in the traditional way, often with shallow needle insertion. Since then he has been treating an average of 30 patients per day, many of them from overseas. He has held many important positions in the Oriental medicine community, including President of the Society for Traditional Japanese Acupuncture, Senior Counselor of the Japanese Traditional Acupuncture and Moxibustion Society, teaching positions at the Tokyo Therapeutic Institute, Toyo Shinkyu College of Oriental Medicine, and Goto College of Medical Arts & Sciences. He also established a study group to research the classical literature of Oriental medicine.

Okada Sensei is a much sought after teacher for seminars. He is generous in sharing his expertise and insights with others, exhibits a strong love of life and has a great sense of humor. A seminar with Okada Sensei is truly a rewarding and enriching experience, and not to be missed by those who want to experience and work towards the highest level of Meridian Therapy acupuncture. He teaches in the Japanese Acupuncture Certification Program as a part of Acupuncture Continuing Education.


Stephen Brown, LAc

Stephen Brown graduated from Japan Central Acupuncture College in Tokyo in 1983 where obtained his license to practice shiatsu, acupuncture, and moxibustion in Japan. In 1984 he attended the Advanced International Acupuncture Training Course at the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing, China. Brown began his teaching career in 1985 as an instructor for the International Acupuncture Training Program of Kuretake Institute in Tokyo. After moving to Seattle in 1986, he started teaching shiatsu and acupuncture at the Northwest Institute of Acupuncture. Brown is also a practitioner and teacher of traditional exercises for health including yoga, tai chi, sotai, and qigong.

Being a native speaker of Japanese Stephen Brown has translated many texts on Oriental medicine and has served as an interpreter for international seminars and conferences. Brown is a founding member of the North American Journal of Oriental Medicine, a journal devoted to traditional Japanese medicine, where he served as the editor in chief from 1994 to 1998. He teaches in the Japanese Acupuncture Certification Program as a part of Acupuncture Continuing Education.


Junji Mizutani, RAc

Junji Mizutani, a leading authority of moxibustion in the West, is the director of the North American Journal of Oriental Medicine (NAJOM). He graduated from the Japan Central Acupuncture College in 1983 and has been practicing and teaching shiatsu, acupuncture and moxibustion for 24 years. He taught Shiatsu at Kikkawa College and Shiatsu School of Canada, and served for three years as the president of the Shiatsu Therapy Association of Ontario. The author of Practical Moxibustion Therapy, Mizutani currently practices in Vancouver, B.C., and lectures in the U.S. and Canada. He teaches in the Japanese Acupuncture Certification Program as a part of Acupuncture Continuing Education.


Katsuyuki Ooue

Katsuyuki Ooue graduated with a degree in pharmacology from Kinki University and operates his own pharmacy and clinic. Ooue graduated from Osaka Acupuncture College, where he was a student of Masakazu Ikeda. He currently practices in Tokushima City, Japan. He is the author of two books: Parent-child Skin Touch Manual, (project to popularize pediatric acupuncture), Tokushima Prefecture Acupuncture Association, 2004; Five Minutes a Day! Parent-child Skin Touch Health Method, Akisho Publishing, Tokyo, 2006. Katsuyuki Ooue teaches in the Japanese Acupuncture Certification Program as a part of Acupuncture Continuing Education.


Hajime Nakane

Nakane sensei is a direct disciple of two great masters in Japanese acupuncture, Okada Meiyu sensei and Okada Akizo sensei. He is a graduate and professor at the Meiji School of Oriental Medicine. He serves on the board of directors of Meridian Therapy Association and a director of Kansai district. Nakane sensei also has been practicing acupuncture, Moxa Therapy and massage at Shinkyu-Meridian-Karasuma in Kyoko, Japan since 2003.

Nakane sensei’s hands flow with grace to perform very precise and meticulous movement to give patient maximum relaxation and comfort in his treatments and looks to pass this skill on to his students.

Atsuki Maeda, MTOM LAc

Atsuki Maeda has over 20 years of practice experience combining Japanese and TCM Acupuncture, and Kampo and Chinese herbal medicine. He graduated from Goto College of Medical Arts and Sciences in 1988 and Emperor's College in 1993, studied at the First Teaching Hospital in Tianjin, China, and is licensed in Japan for Acupuncture, Moxibustion, and Anma/Massage/Shiatsu, and in California for Acupuncture. In 1989 Mr. Maeda completed the Stroke Rehab Acupuncture Technique Master’s Course (Xingnao Kaiqiao Fa), and then treated stroke patients intensively at Kuroda Hospital in Tokyo. He taught at Emperor's College as a Professor and Clinical Supervisor for five years, serves on the board of directors of AIMC Berkeley, helps as a teaching assistant in the Japanese Acupuncture Certification Program, and practices in Torrance, CA.


Haro Ogawa, MSOM LAc CMT ATC

Haro Ogawa has worked privately for Golden State Warriors basketball players, NASCAR drivers, and the Japanese National Baseball Team. Originally he trained in Japan as a licensed acupuncturist and moxibustion practitioner, certified Shiatsu therapist, massage therapist and athletic trainer, and has practiced Meridian Therapy Acupuncture for over 15 years. His specialties include stress related and gynecological problems, sports medicine, orthopedics and pain management. Assistant Professor Ogawa also graduated with a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from the Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine College, Berkeley (AIMC Berkeley) in 2003. He teaches Oriental Medicine Bodywork and Acupuncture Therapy: Japanese Hari Acupuncture, helps as a teaching assistant in the Japanese Acupuncture Certification program, and practices in the Japanese Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine Clinics at AIMC Berkeley


Hideko Pelzer, MSOM LAc

Assistant Professor Hideko Pelzer is a Second Degree Black Belt in the Japanese martial art of Aikido. She graduated from Tsukuba University in Japan, later earning her Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from Meiji College of Oriental Medicine, now AIMC Berkeley. She has a private Oriental Medicine practice in Suisun City, CA. Pelzer is expert in Japanese needling technique, and passes this on to her students when supervising acupuncture student interns in the Berkeley Community Acupuncture Clinic, and teaching Acupuncture Techniques. She also teaches Acupuncture Channels and Points.


Jason Beito, MS LAc DNBAO

Associate Professor Jason Beito began studying the principles of Taijiquan, Aikido, & Qigong in order to enhance his athletic performance in football & judo, when he was encouraged to study Oriental medicine. After earning his BS in Exercise Physiology from the University of California, Davis, he studied traditional Chinese medicine at ACTCM and Traditional Japanese Acupuncture & Moxibustion within the context of Keiraku Chiryo (Japanese Meridian Therapy). Certified in Firstline Therapy and Acupuncture Orthopedics (NBAO), Beito specializes in therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC) and pain management, providing acupuncture and TLC services in the Integrative Medicine Clinic. He is currently the Clinic Director at AIMC Berkeley, teaches Acupuncture Therapy: Japanese Acupuncture A & B, and is also a teaching assistant in the Japanese Acupuncture Certification Program.


Todd Turetsky, MS LAc 

Todd Turetsky began his studies of East Asian medicine in 1993. He received a Masters Degree from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in 1997. He has earned certification in Japanese-style Acupuncture from Bastyr University in Seattle. He is also a certified provider in the treatment of Hepatitis C with Oriental medicine. Turetsky studies a practices Toyohari, a style of Japanese Acupuncture. In addition to his specialization he also practices Japanese style moxibustion, Sotai method bodywork, and Chinese herbology. Todd Turetsky supervises acupuncture student interns in the Berkeley Community Acupuncture Clinic, and is a teaching assistant in the Japanese Japanese Acupuncture Certification Program.
