At AIMC Berkeley, we offer a variety of affordable health care options to the public in our Community Acupuncture Clinic.  We offer acupuncture treatment performed by student interns as well as licensed acupuncturists. Please read on for the details of our services!

Acupuncture Student Intern Services - Treatment by student interns is coordinated and supervised by a senior licensed practitioner.

Acupuncture Intern Level III: 1 hr 15 m $30 
Treatment by an advanced student intern. Observation students may be present at this level.

Acupuncture Intern Level II: 1 hr 30 m $30 
Treatment by an intermediate student intern. Observation students may be present at this level.

Acupuncture Intern Level I: 1 hr 45 m $20 
Treatment by a team of two-to-three student interns working closely with a senior licensed practitioner.

Acupuncture in an Observation setting: 2 hr 10 m $FREE 
Treatment by a licensed practitioner while observed by a group of students.

Community-Style Acupuncture: 1 hr $10
Appointments available on Tuesdays 1:20 - 4:10p.
Wednesdays 6:00 - 8:00p.
You get acupuncture while seated in a reclining chair with up to 7 other patients in a large room by student interns under the supervision of a senior licensed acupuncturist.

Ear Acupuncture Clinic: 1 hr $5
Appointments available on Thursdays 1:00 - 4:30p.

Patients are treated by needling points in the ear in a quiet, relaxing group setting. Most conditions treated with regular acupuncture can also be treated with ear acupuncture.

Licensed Acupuncture

Your best treatment strategy will typically include six to ten visits, at least once per week.

Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.) 
Specialties include acupuncture orthopedics, osteoarthritis, fertility, ob/gyn, pediatrics, sports injuries, smoking cessation, and stress reduction. Meet the licensed practitioners...

During each visit, your practitioner will perform an intake & evaluation, along with the most appropriate healing modalities to address your health concerns. 

Fees start at $85.00 for the initial visit and will range from $56-$85 for each follow up, depending on the length of time & the complexity of the case.

Medical Qigong Therapy
Like Tai Chi, Medical Qigong has been proven effective in the treatment of the following
  • high blood pressure
  • depression
  • chronic illness
  • a variety of other ailments

Our practitioners use light touch bodywork, sensing your energy and moving it to relieve excesses and fill deficiencies. They then teach you exercises, sounds, visualizations and meditations to practice on your own.

Drop-in Qigong Exercise Class: $10
Medical Qigong Intern Treatment: $25


Meet the Licensed Practitioners

Abba Anderson MSOM L.Ac.

Abba brings a lifelong fascination with energy medicine to her eclectic practice.  Abba’s clients receive personalized treatments incorporating esoteric acupuncture, Reiki, cupping, hypnotherapy and Chinese herbs.  Abba specializes in treating people with chronic pain, autoimmune disorders, and emotional difficulties, and her sensitive clients appreciate her gentle needling style.  Abba has a lifelong love of literature - her English master’s thesis explored Virginia Woolf’s creative process – and she currently serves her profession as Editor in Chief of the California Journal of Oriental Medicine.   

Jason Beito MS L.Ac. DNBAO

Associate Professor Jason Beito has been actively involved in the martial & healing arts since age six.  His background includes Judo, Karate, high school and collegiate football, Tai Ji, Aikido, and Qigong.  Jason has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Physiology from UC Davis, and is a member of the National Strength & Conditioning Association. In 2001, he received his Master’s of Science in Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine, and has been a member of the National Board of Acupuncture Orthopedics since 2005.  He specializes in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of sports- related injuries, combining his passion for sports medicine, martial, and healing arts to assist athletes in achieving and maintaining peak levels of performance. “Coach Beito” has worked with players from the Oakland Raiders, Indianapolis Colts, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Texas A & M, and is an assistant coach with the Bishop O’Dowd Dragons.

David Caruso-Radin L.Ac.

Student Affairs Dean David Caruso-Radin is a licensed acupuncturist who specializes in  psychiatric and emotional issues, dermatology, facial rejuvenation, weight management, stress management, and nutrition. David received a Master’s of Science degree in organizational psychology from Baruch College in New York, NY, studied Shiatsu and Integrative Nutrition with Paul Pitchford at the Heartwood Institute in Garberville, CA, and is a nationally certified diplomate of Asian Bodywork Therapy.  David earned Wild Goose Qi Gong teacher certification from Master Hui Liu at the Wen Wu School of Martial Arts in El Cerrito, CA, and trained in Medical Qigong under Suzanne Friedman L.Ac. DMQ at AIMC Berkeley.  David teaches Nutrition East and West and Qigong at AIMC Berkeley.  You can see David’s evocative photographs of his travels in China in our clinic treatment rooms. 

Atsuki Maeda L.Ac., M.T.O.M.

AIMC Berkeley board member and instructor Atsuki Maeda was born in Tokyo and attended high school and college in the U.S. Atsuki practices gentle Japanese-style acupuncture with moxibustion and therapeutic massage and prescribes Japanese Kampo herbal remedies. Atsuki specializes in treating patients with chronic pain, people undergoing treatment for cancer, and he uses methods he learned at the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University in China to treat stroke patients. Atsuki received his master’s degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine from Emperor’s College in 1993. He operates Maeda Acupuncture & Medical Therapy Group in Torrance, California and teaches acupuncture technique at AIMC Berkeley and Emperor’s College. He is fluent in English and Japanese 

David Melly L.Ac.

David incorporates European Biological Medicine - including homeopathy and functional biochemistry - with his practice of acupuncture and herbal medicine.  Biological Medicine is widely recognized in Europe as a, non-invasive and highly effective alternative to conventional Western medicine which can be especially valuable for treating chronic and autoimmune illnesses. David specializes in internal medicine and dermatology, treating many ailments including thyroid management, hypertension, eczema, uterine fibroids and autoimmune illnesses. He has received advanced training in oncology. David studied Biological Medicine in Germany, and has worked as a technician blood microscopy technician, David has studied native Bay Area plants for about 13 years, and has worked in creek restoration.  

Hideko Pelzer, MSOM L.Ac.

Assistant Professor Hideko Pelzer is a second degree Black Belt in Aikido. She graduated from Tsukuba University in Japan, later earning her MS from Meiji College of Oriental Medicine, now AIMC, Berkeley. In addition to teaching at AIMC, Berkeley, Hideko maintains a private practice in Suisun City, CA, where she specializes in the treatment of women’s health, pediatrics and stress-related disorders. 

Jorge Madrid L.Ac.

Jorge is a native of Mexico City who specializes in internal medicine, including digestive and respiratory disorders, stress and insomnia.  Jorge also uses Master Tung’s style acupuncture to treat pain and injuries.  Jorge was drawn to acupuncture when he received treatment for soccer injuries in 1994. “I witnessed the reach and power of acupuncture - in one month, my acupuncturist fixed my knees, five treatments in total,” says Jorge.  Jorge has played soccer since he was 3 years old, and for the past 18 years he’s played competitive soccer for Berkeley’s Starry Plough team, where he’s won several titles and made many solid friends. “I understand the mechanics of the game and common injuries,” he says. His hobbies include literature, ethnic music, world movies, chess and camping.
